Miniature alcohol. Small bottle, but expensive
Odessa Vyacheslav Samoteev has a unique collection of mini-bottles.
His collection includes 1,100 items, including only cognac and Scotch whiskey.
Where did your passion begin?
I worked in a shop alcoholic beverages, according to my position, I had to read a lot about alcohol - both about its production and drinking. Then somewhere I saw small bottles, which are an exact copy of a large one, and caught fire. Began to acquire and bought everything that was in the city.
How are you expanding your collection today?
I am a member of a collectors club, there is a “Collectors Forum” in Ukraine, international meetings are held several times a year, and I visit everything that takes place in Ukraine and neighboring countries. We exchange or buy and sell with collectors. With the help of the Internet, I find people whose bottles just lie there as souvenirs, I buy or exchange them. I order online wherever possible. I even met with the owner of the cognac house Pruhlo. Once I wrote a letter there, and a girl answered me in Russian that they were going to Odessa (it turns out that they supply spirits to one of our factories). So this owner left me bottles with his autograph a couple of times. By the way, many collectors do not even know that there are the same "sick", each collector thinks that he is the only one, since this hobby is very young in our country. In Europe, in Asia, this hobby is registered at the state level, everyone knows about it, there are collectors' clubs, but in our country they know only numismatics and philately. It was us, when we created the Russian forum of collectors, who came up with the term "alcominimalism" (from the words "alcohol" and "small").
How do your friends react to the collection?
Of course, at first everyone is in shock, and then they themselves become interested, control the replenishment, and bring exhibits from everywhere. True, not always what you need. For example, I don’t put 100-gram ones in my collection - I have a limit of up to 50 grams.
Struggling with the temptation to drink something from the collection?
No, it's taboo. That's what big bottles are for. Why hold the baby?
What is the principle of selection of exhibits?
Only French cognac and Scotch whisky. In my opinion, these are the most interesting drinks.
And if you bring vodka or liquor?
They go to the exchange fund.
What problems are you facing?
I order a lot on the Internet, and it happens that the package does not reach - or it breaks, or the customs does not let through. Plus, the wine evaporates. We are struggling with this - I, for example, solder with wax. Now collectors have found a new way - to stick a wax-based tape around the cap. Should help. For some, this does not matter, but for me it is very important that the bottle is full.
What is the most important thing for you in the exhibit?
For me, the most important thing is the content. For many, the bottle itself is an exhibit, they keep beautiful bottles empty, but I don’t chase after that. Many people like to collect "dashes" - the smallest differences in the inscriptions on the labels. But this is already considered a separate position. To date, there are more than 100 bottles of Nemirov, and collectors are chasing exactly the “dashes”, then creating their own catalogs. I am also going to create my own site-electronic catalog, but first you need to learn how to take beautiful pictures.
“This is the most unique bottle from the cognac house Daniel Bouju. The cognac house was founded in 1805, they recently bottled the cognac spirit of 1905. There are two dates here - one hundred years of the cognac house and the anniversary of the 1905 revolution. There are no alcohols of 1905 anywhere in the world at all - this is the uniqueness of this alcohol. Only 14 bottles were made, mine is number 13. It costs over $1,000.”

Probably, each of us in childhood was engaged in collecting something - coins, matchboxes, mugs, badges ... Roots of alcoholism
The appearance of the first minions - namely, this is how they call miniature bottles of alcohol, the volume of which is 50 ml or less - dates back to the 18th century. True, then they were ceramic containers, because glass was still an expensive and labor-intensive material.
Merchants filled their drinks from barrels into small containers for promotional purposes so that customers could taste and make their choice. Minions were further developed already in the 20th century, during Prohibition in the USA. The ban did not affect alcoholic beverages to such an extent, so all manufacturers of the world sent their products to the United States in miniature bottles, ostensibly for advertising purposes, but in reality, of course, for direct consumption.
Miniatures are widely used today for hotel minibars, on board aircraft and in other places where a large bottle of alcohol does not justify itself. There are also drinks that are bottled exclusively in such a volume and consumed as a medicine - this applies to some herbal liqueurs from Germany, which are drunk as an aperitif. But for a separate category of people, minions have become a collector's item, a passion and an outlet.
I must say that this direction of collecting is very young. The Midwest Miniature Bottle Collectors International Club was founded by a group of Chicago enthusiasts in 1979, today it includes collectors from 15 countries around the world. In the Soviet Union, the first glass mini-bottles appeared in the late 1950s. The Russian club of alcominimalists was created in 2005, at the same time the name for this type of collecting was chosen - alcoholism. How to become an alcoholist
Almost no one becomes an alcoholist "by vocation", purposefully. Most often, the first miniature bottle of alcohol appears by chance, usually as a gift, followed by another, and only then the idea comes - why not make them a collectible?

What are the collections
Every novice collector has to decide what kind of items he will collect. In the case of alcominiatures, the first step is to determine:
Volume of collected bottles- since there are no strict rules and criteria for this direction, some collect all bottles with a volume of 100 ml or less. But still, the classic collections consist of 50-ml bottles, they belong to the alco-minimalist.
Type of drinks- you can concentrate only on cognacs, whiskeys or liqueurs, or you can collect all types of drinks. It is clear that in the second case the collection grows much faster, and in the first case it becomes more valuable. By the way, according to collectors, it is liquor bottles that are most often found on sale. But beer in miniature is considered a very rare and valuable trophy. In the same time soft drinks(syrups, juices, etc.) are not allowed to be collected. That is, of course, no one forbids collecting them, but this is no longer related to alcominimalism.
Package can also serve as a sign for separating collections. The vast majority of alcoholic beverages are bottled in classic glass bottles. First of all, the new acquisition must be cleaned of excise stamps, price tags and other paper debris, but so that the label does not suffer. Among the alcominimalists, there are whole instructions for steaming, rubbing, removing labels and traces of glue.
Based on the fact that only full and not empty bottles can be in the collection, collectors have to work to ensure that the drink does not evaporate over time through the cork. To do this, the bottles are dipped in molten colorless wax, and recently special wax tapes or even ordinary silicone sealant are more often used. The purpose of these manipulations is to make the container airtight so as not to lose the precious contents over the years.
